In the second season opener, Busy and Amanda are reading aloud from a Harlequin novel called Lovesick Babes (which I'm pretty sure you won't find in an Amazon search) while eating Valentine candy. This leads Amanda into a discussion of what it would be like to have sex, which is a pretty big coincidence considering what's about to happen...
Amanda receives a phone call for her father and goes into her parents room to get him, and walks in on this. Her father tries to talk to her about it later, but obviously she didn't want to stick around for that. Amanda leaves for her babysitting job.
The family Amanda is babysitting for don't watch TV or eat junk food, so when Busy comes over after the kids are in bed there isn't much to do. More sex talk follows, mainly about whose parents do it more. Busy mentions that her mother is still staying at her grandmother's house, a reference to the previous episode. She then finds a guide to sex book on the bookshelf and decides she wants to look at the pictures. The girls are shocked at the pictures in the book, though no details are provided about what they are seeing.
The Bornsteins suddenly come home and Amanda is stuck not knowing what to do with the book. Of course, she can't just calmly put it back on the bookshelf. Hey look, it's Miss Avery from Degrassi. Remember that link I posted in the gay karate teacher post? I guess this actress was typecast as being the kinky adult in Canadian teen dramas. On the way home, Amanda reveals that she has stuffed the book in her backpack.
Amanda is reading the book by flashlight when her mother walks in, wanting to talk about Amanda walking in on her and Mr. Zimm. Again, Amanda doesn't want to hear it, and she shifts around awkwardly, obviously hiding something. Her mother is either too dumb to see it or just decides to let it drop because she ignores Amanda's odd behavior and leaves the room. Amanda then hurriedly shoves the book into her backpack again.
So not only does Amanda take the book to school (in an effort to keep her parents from finding it), she leaves it hanging out of her open backpack for Monkey Ears to swipe as he's walking behind her. Because it's so much better that kids at school find her with the book than her parents. She tells Busy about the problem, and Busy is just like "it's your book, Amanda" even though she's the one who found it. On another note, it seems the kids are still in the sixth grade, as a comment is made that only seventh graders take showers and Busy and Amanda didn't have to.
Monkey Ears shows the book around in the boys' restroom, and then comes up with the bright idea of selling Xeroxed copies of pages of the book. It seems strange now since kids can just go online and look at porn, but back then this would've been about as good as it got. Meanwhile, Amanda decides to quit worrying about the book and put the whole thing behind her. Busy wonders about one of the illustrations in the book where the people looked like a human donut.
Busy, still curious, asks Dom if he's still a virgin. Manny walks in and he and Dom start arguing over who has more sexual experience. "Your last date was with Mrs. Hand and her five daughters." Manny warns Busy not to rush into anything.
Back at school, Monkey Ears has donned a trench coat, hat and glasses to sell copies of the book to little kids. He's caught right away by the gym teacher. Amanda hears from Chrissy that Monkey has been selling porn. They watch as he opens his locker and takes out the book. Despite his crush on Amanda, he's quick to point the finger at her when the teacher threatens to call his parents.
Amanda's mother is called and she wants to have a long talk with her. American shows, at least at this time, never let anyone say anything about how sex was done. So when there was an episode about a character learning "the birds and the bees" as it was generally called, the character would inevitably say "I already know that part" or the camera would pan back and music would play as the characters whispered what happened. So when Amanda's mother says "the penis goes in the vagina" it's a pretty big deal. That's all we wanted to know! And Amanda already knew that part so she didn't have to say it. But they can, because it's Canada. Anyway, Amanda says that at the beginning of the episode she thought sex was romantic, but after reading that book it seems disgusting. Amanda asks her mother about her first time, and Amanda gets off on the romance of the story of her father stealing her mother from another guy.
Amanda is supposed to bring the book back to the Bornsteins' and apologize, but she just puts it back when she's babysitting and doesn't tell them what happened. I like it when kids on TV get away with something every now and then like this. Amanda tells Busy about her mom having sex before her dad and they both act like it's a big deal.
Next episode: Busy undergoes a makeover to look like a girl for her date with Troy.
