The Worst Thing That Happened and the Best Thing That Didn't 1x7

This episode might have the best title of the series, after Am I a Pervert Or What?

Busy learns that her drum set will have to be moved to make room for her unborn brother or sister. Lots of whining and complaining ensues.

Amanda and Busy are in a parking lot discussing the situation when Amanda gets hit by a car driven by her crush Justin. Somehow, she gets by with only scraping her hand. Busy rips into Justin, who is obviously too young to be driving, but Amanda actually seems apologetic.

Amanda is in awe that Justin gave her his "hickey hider" (a bandanna) to keep after she bleed on it. Her mother comes in with an invitation for Amanda and Busy to go to a cousin's bar mitzvah. Busy doesn't want to go and suggests asking Justin.

Amanda and Busy go over to Busy's family's butcher shop to make the call to Justin. There really is no reason storyline-wise for them to be there, but we get to see how stressed out the Ramones are. Amanda squeals as Busy makes the call while Mr. Ramone yells for them to get off the phone and Mrs. Ramone tries to calm everyone down. Anyway, consumed with guilt that he nearly killed her, Justin says okay. He couldn't really say no without looking like a jerk, could he?

Now we're in Amanda's room looking at clothes to wear to the bar mitzvah. The phone rings, and Amanda freaks out that it's Justin calling to cancel. But it's only Busy's brother calling with some bad news...

Busy rushes home where some stereotypical Italian lady tells her that her mother lost the baby. Frankie has to explain to her what that means and that she'd been carrying heavy boxes of meat for their father when it happened. Busy yells at her father that it's all his fault and we get a close up of Mr. Ramone looking sad/contemplative.

Amanda comes over and she and Busy have a meaningful conversation about God's will and the fact that Busy had wished the baby wasn't coming.

Busy visits her mother in the hospital and repeats her concerns about wishing the baby away. Mrs. Ramone assures her it wasn't her fault and says they need to have a service to pray for the baby's soul. Busy says she doesn't believe in God after what happened and her mom just gives her the standard 'god doesn't give us more than we can handle' BS. (That is no where in the Bible.) Mrs. Ramone tells Busy how her father isn't strong and is (rightfully) carrying a lot of guilt and needs her to be there for him.

Jeez, I thought that was some guy lying behind Amanda there and then I remembered all her posters. Anyway, Amanda is considering breaking her "date" with Justin to go to the funeral. Her mother discourages this, says a funeral like that is usually just for family, but Amanda is still torn.

Meanwhile, Busy is having a bizarre dream sequence in which she herself is a baby sleeping in a crib. She wakes up and comes into the kitchen to find her father sitting at the table crying. It's a powerful scene because you can tell that Sam Ramone isn't the type who succumbs to tears that often.

So you know that the next scene will have Amanda at her bar mitzvah and Justin probably won't even show up and we'll have one of those sad endings again where she realizes too late that she should've gone to support her friend instead.

So I was wrong again. Amanda does show up at the service. I guess just having the baby die is sad enough as it is.

Next episode: Busy finally questions her sexuality, but for all the wrong reasons.
