Mr. Ramone and the boys are watching more stock basketball footage on TV as Busy practices her drums. Her mother comes up and asks her to stop, halfway implying that her playing isn't very good. I just noticed that now Busy has a sort of man mural on her wall, just as Amanda's disappeared. Was it there before? Did she steal it from Amanda's room to prove herself somehow?
Busy is practicing her drums in the school's band room when this guy comes in who at first glance you'd think was a girl. He asks her to be on a demo tape he's cutting and the two play a song called Confusion until the band teacher comes in and makes them leave.
Busy recaps Amanda on the episode so far and Amanda is actually happy for her and supportive of her music, unlike in the episode Wild Life. They pass by Peter and say hello and he sort of shifts around as if he's hiding something.
Some guy knocks Busy's books all over the ground and Peter comes up and fights him until he picks them up. Busy notices a bruise on Peter's face and he pretends the guy hit him. Of course Amanda takes this as proof that Peter like-likes Busy, because when can Busy not just hang out with a guy without Amanda saying something like that.
Mr. Ramone, too, tells Busy to keep the door open when Peter comes over. Because like everyone else on this show, he has terrible gaydar. Peter talks a little about his family life. His mother and brother moved "out west" a couple of years ago and it's just him and his dad. Busy invites Peter to stay for dinner.
Busy uses Peter's being over to brag about how his father lets him play all he wants because he believes in his talent. She hasn't actually met Peter's father yet, and I can't imagine that he would talk him up like this, so I'm not sure where she's getting the information from.
Back in the school's band room, Peter yells at Busy for not playing up to his expectations and then throws Amanda out. Mr. Boyle comes in again and gives Peter another detention. Peter storms out angrily, and Amanda witnesses him scrape a key along the side of Mr. Boyle's car.
Busy goes over to Peter's house and is introduced to his dad, who is serious about music. Peter apologizes for his behavior earlier, claiming that it was because artists are temperamental.
Amanda asks Busy if she minds Peter yelling at her, and Busy acts like it's no big deal. Amanda admits that she saw Peter keying Mr. Boyle's car and again Busy shrugs it off.
Busy asks Peter about the car incident and he more or less admits to it but downplays the severity of the crime. Peter's dad comes in and starts playing guitar. Peter makes a correction about his finger movements and makes a face and his father flies off the handle. He starts slapping Peter and yelling. Busy runs off and we don't see the rest of it. The next day Busy agrees not to tell anyone.
Peter plays street hockey with Busy and her brothers and gets into an altercation with Dom when Dom calls him a birdbrain. Manny drives up and stops the fight. Peter runs away like a little girl.
Another deep school restroom conversation between Busy and Amanda. Amanda thinks Busy should blow the whistle on Peter's dad, but Busy wants to play on that demo tape and make it big.
But then of course she does tell. Well, not "of course," because this show does have sad endings from time to time. Peter walks out with a social worker, scowling at Busy.
Busy Ramone VS Stephanie Tanner
I apologize for all the Full House comparisons. This show is just on all the time! The premise for this episode is hardly an original idea. On Full House, Stephanie crosses paths with a hard-to-get-along-with boy who eventually confides that his father beats him. The Ready Or Not episode is a little grittier because we actually see some of the violence and the language that goes along with it. It's hard to have this kind of episode without seeming like an afterschool special, but then again, there are some quality afterschool specials. Of course, there's also a Degrassi episode that covers this topic.
Next episode: Amanda tutors Chrissy.
