We are at some sort of PTA/school meeting that Mrs. Zimm failed to show up for on time. She does appear at the last minute after the meeting is over.
Phyllis explains that she was late because her art teacher asked her to be the model for the class. Amanda doesn't catch on at first that she means nude modeling, and her mother seems to take some sort of perverse joy in enlightening her.
Busy has a lot of fun picturing Amanda's mother naked, probably not for the first time. She even wonders how she was posed.
Now Phyllis wants Amanda to come with her to the community center where they are having a showcase of the nude pictures that were drawn of her. She seems surprised when Amanda declines the offer.
While Phyllis is out, a handy man comes by to fix their sliding glass door. Amanda semi flirts with him and, both being aspiring writers, they decide to read each other's stories. Phyllis comes home and really flirts with him and they both seem to forget Amanda is there. Then there's a short scene where Amanda recaps Busy on what has been going on in the scenes she wasn't in.
Amanda asks her mother (while she's preparing to go out on a date) if she could not go out all the time like she's been doing. Phyllis tells her she's single now and she's going to date and that Amanda will have to put on her big girl pants and suck it up. She does reluctantly agree not to bring the men home for now.
Busy and Amanda have ridden their bikes to the community center where the art exhibit is still set up. Busy just about soils herself with excitement to see the nude pictures of Mrs. Zimm. Amanda's mom has got it going on apparently. But lucky for Amanda, the pictures are too abstract to be able to tell who the model was. The girls gag over the hairy art teacher who Phyllis went out with.
It seems Amanda has removed the man mural that used to decorate her wall. The room looks kind of bare without it. Amanda walks in on her mother reading her letter to Danny. Phyllis suggests that Amanda is too serious about him and Amanda snaps back that she's loyal and she likes one man at a time. Kind of a disrespectful thing to say, not to mention it will later prove to be untrue.
A knock on the door interrupts and it turns out to be John, the handy man from before. He asks Phyllis to dinner that night. Amanda comes in and purposely brings up her mother's other recent dates to embarrass her.
After a little talking to from her mother, Amanda has another trippy dream sequence about her naked mother surrounded by men. It's not as X-rated as it sounds.
Amanda calls her father and tattles on her mother going out on so many dates. Her father says they are legally separated now and she isn't doing anything wrong. Not exactly what she wanted to hear. Amanda looks long and hard at a photoshopped picture of a much younger version of her father and herself.
John comes for his and Phyllis's date and brings Amanda one of his stories. Privately, Amanda reminds her mother of her promise not to bring men over but Phyllis brushes her off and sarcastically asks if she has her permission to go on the date.
Busy and Amanda get into Phyllis's stuff and Busy comes upon Phyllis's diaphragm. She thinks it's a frisbee or a hat and puts it on her head. Amanda tells her what it is, but she doesn't know how it works (I thought we were going to get an explanation). It makes Amanda wonder if her mother is going to have sex with all these guys she's been dating.
She calls her mother (does Phyllis have a cell phone?) and pretends to be sick so she'll come home. Phyllis sees that she's lying, sends Busy home and calls Amanda a manipulative little girl. Amanda threatens to move in with her dad because he doesn't throw himself at every woman. How does she know that?
Amanda tells Busy on the phone about her plans to move in with her dad. She says she couldn't get him on the phone, and Busy gently suggests that maybe he was out on a date too. Phyllis overhears this and she and Amanda have a talk. She tells her that she and her father are probably never getting back together. Amanda confides that she wants Phyllis to go back to acting like a mom rather than trying to be a friend. The credits roll and the two talk about baking cookies (it's kind of hard to tell with the music playing).
Next episode: Busy finds out that her temperamental new friend has an abusive father.
